Computer Engineering Programme

Outline

Image of the Electrical and Computer Engineering BuildingThe Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (BE(Hons)) Computer Engineering is a new degree programme with its first intack starting in 2006.  The programme is jointly taught by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

What is Computer Engineering?

It is the design and development of electronic devices and computers using digital processes.  Many everyday objects don't look like computers but do include them.  We call these embedded devices and examples are: cellphones, MP3 players, pocket computers, traffic light systems, cars, heart rate monitors, even toasters!

Computer engineering brings together, in a single programme, circuit theory and digital electronics from the electrical and electronic engineering field, and computer programming, networking  and systems covered in the computer sciences.  This provides students with the knowledge and expertise to create the next era of reliable and clever digital electonic devices.

Why Study Computer Engineering?

There is currently a nationwide and international shortage of computer engineers.  The electronics industry in New Zealand is a major exporter, much bigger than the wine industry for example.  This course has been developed by the University of Canterbury and the electonics industry to overcome this shortage problem.

What are the job opportunities?

There are plenty of exciting job opportunities in New Zealand and overseas for computer engineers.  Many work for Tait Electronics, Dynamic Controls, Navman, Trimble Navigation, Fisher & Paykel, Allied Telesis, and any other company that creates devices with embedded systems or involved in software development.  Almost half of New Zealand's electronics industry is located here in Christchurch, many of the companies started by UC graduates.
